Bowlers celebrate cover completion

Corks popped and speeches flowed at the ‘We are Undercover’ official opening of the roof over one of Bowls Orewa’s greens.

The event, on March 13, was attended by around 180 members and invited guests, including representatives of Bowls NZ, Bowls North Harbour, sponsors, builders who worked on the project, and the club’s patron, Rodney MP Mark Mitchell.

As well as a ribbon cutting, the occasion was the perfect time for president Tony Rickerby to announce that the Code of Compliance from Auckland Council was finally approved, the same day.

The $800,000 roof build was a three-year project (HM July 3, 2019) completed last October, with finishing touches applied in January.

The location opposite the beach, and sandy soil, made it a challenging construction – four times the usual amount of concrete was needed for the footings and Council had strict ‘wind zone’ requirements to be adhered to.

Lighting allows the green to be played on in all weathers, day and night, and the cover has also been appreciated by bowlers over the hot summer days.

Tony says it has already made an enormous difference to the club, with membership growing and healthy bookings for tournaments and corporate games.
