The achievements of Kaipara District’s top athletes were recognised at the Maungaturoto Country Club this month.
Richard Westlake, of Maungaturoto, took home the Sportsman of the Year and the Supreme Award for having won the Australian .410 National Championship for clay target shooting.
Meanwhile, Maungaturoto’s Annemarie Holst’s success in squash resulted in her winning both the ASB Junior Sportsperson and Silver Fern Farms Sportswoman of the Year, as well as receiving the ASB Youth code for squash.
Annemarie played in the New Zealand junior team in the Oceania U19 test match against Australia and won all her sets.
She is the top seeded player for the Northland junior girls team and won the Northland Junior Girls Championship tournament.
The Kaipara Wolves rugby team, comprising junior players from Otamatea and Wellsford, received the Junior Team of the Year Award, after winning the Northland U18 Championship.
They were acknowledged for their exceptional performance in their first year as a team, particularly considering the challenge of getting players from across the district to trainings and games.
Fittingly, their coach Mike Peeni was named Coach of the Year.
Peeni also coached the Spartans touch team, which was runner-up in the Waipu competition and won the Kaiwaka touch module.
Squash player Peter Cave received a Kaipara District Council Contribution to Sport Award for his service to the Maungaturoto Squash Club.
Cave was 18 when the club first opened and over the years he has held several committee positions and gets stuck in to maintain the facilities when required.
The Mangawhai Pennants Golf Team was awarded the Team of the Year Award for winning the North Harbour Men’s Frank Nobilo Championship this year.
The Silver Fern Farms Kaipara Sports Awards are in their 12th year and are organised by Sport Northland.
