Yoga gets heart pumping

Anyone who has done a good, strong yoga class will know that it’s easy to work up a sweat.

However, yoga practice is not generally known for raising the heart rate.

One exception is a form put together by local yoga teacher Shelley Charlton, who began combining cardio with yoga poses, including doing some poses on a rebounder (mini trampoline).

She says she had given up running because of knee problems, but missed the adrenaline rush, so she started using a rebounder to get her heart pounding.

“I found that the unsteady platform was also a great way to really challenge my balance practice,” Shelley says.

The programme starts with a cardio workout, stretch and balance (on the tramp, or ground) and then more cardio exercises and yoga to warm down. “It’s basically high intensity interval training, so you can swap the mini tramp for a stepper, skipping rope, jumping jacks or even steps.”

She says this combination of stretching, balance and cardio makes it an ideal, accessible exercise. “Nothing should hurt and having fun is our number one rule,” she says.

Last year she patented YogaBounce and wrote an eBook called YogaBounce: the best of both worlds”.

She also put together a 28-day challenge, consisting of short videos so that people could try Yoga Bounce at home. This was recently relaunched on YouTube.

Shelley is also taking half-hour long YogaBounce classes for small groups of people (no more than five per class) at Fitter Faster Stronger in Whangaparaoa.
