New date for sand hearing

The application has been contentious. Protestors recently met at Mangawhai, spelling out SOS – save our sand.

A resource consent hearing for Kaipara Limited’s application to extract two million cubic metres of sand offshore from Mangawhai and Pakiri will be held from May 5 to 14.

Proceedings will open at 9.30am at the Warkworth Town Hall on May 5.

There will be a session at the Omaha Marae at 9am on Friday, May 7, and there will be two sessions at the Pakiri Hall at 9.30am on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11.

Council comments and the applicants reply is tentatively scheduled for May 31 at the Warkworth Town Hall.

Kaipara Limited is seeking to renew its consent to dredge sand in the Mangawhai-Pakiri embayment.

If granted, the 20-year consent would allow Kaipara Limited to extract up to 150,000 cubic metres a year, with a cap of two million cubic metres.
