Traffic building on roads

Lengthy traffic queues are building at several police checkpoints as Level 3 lockdown comes into force for the entire Auckland region.

Vehicles are being stopped on a number of roads along the Auckland-Northland border, including State Highway 1, north of Te Hana, and along the Twin Coast Highway into Mangawhai, near Ryan Road, Cames Road, north of Coal Hill Road and Black Swamp Road.

NZ Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says that officers are once again urging people to play their part and heed the message to go home and stay home.

“We will be stopping vehicles and questioning drivers, but as has been our approach through the Covid-19 response, our first focus will be on educating people and ensuring they are aware of the new restrictions,” he said.

From midday, Police started operating nine checkpoints at exit points just inside the regional boundaries, largely based on the Auckland Super City boundaries.
