The relocation of the local pétanque club from Stanmore Bay to behind Orewa Bowls Club has reaped rewards, providing enough space for the club to host this month’s national doubles tournament.
This is the first time that Hibiscus Pétanque has hosted a national tournament – the new terrain allows for 36 teams to participate in the doubles championship and will also make it possible for the club to host further national and regional tournaments.
The doubles event takes place at the club’s new courts in Western Reserve, 214 Hibiscus Coast Highway, on December 7 and 8.
Preliminary rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday morning with the finals played midafternoon on Sunday.
Last year’s winners from Bayview Club in Napier are among those to look out for, as well as Mervyn Wilson from Dunedin City club, who has also represented NZ. Mervyn lost the use of the right side of his body after a stroke, but has learned to play with his left hand and often finishes in the top eight.
The public is invited to come and watch some of the country’s top players battle it out for the doubles title. Games start at 8.30am and finish around 5pm.
