Changes proposed to national electoral boundaries before the general election next year include replacing the name ‘Rodney’ with ‘Whangaparāoa’, as well as making changes within the electorate.
The adjustments are proposed because of population growth. Without the changes, the Rodney electorate would be 14 percent over quota, and growing, the report says.
The Helensville electorate to the west is taking over some of what was previously within Rodney, gaining 20,100 from Rodney (including Warkworth and Cape Rodney), 5000 from Northland and 4100 from Upper Harbour.
To balance these changes, Helensville loses population of 11,700 around Coatesville to Rodney (proposed Whangaparāoa) and population of 17,800, including the Waitakere Ranges, to New Lynn.
Labour list MP based in Rodney, Marja Lubeck does not want to comment until a Labour Party meeting on the issue takes place in Silverdale this coming weekend, and Rodney MP Mark Mitchell is currently unable to be reached for comment.
The Representation Commission released its report on the proposed boundaries and names of electorates yesterday and the proposals are now open for public consultation. The final changes will be adopted in April 2020.
These changes do not affect the local government electoral boundaries, so the Hibiscus Coast remains within Hibiscus & Bays.
