Ministry moves forward with land sale

Plans to subdivide and sell land that is currently part of Whangaparaoa College are moving ahead.

Land Information NZ has applied to Auckland Council for consent to subdivide that would split the site, which runs along Whangaparaoa Road, west from the corner of Stanmore Bay Road to opposite the town centre, into three parcels of land. Two of these (Lots 1 and 4 on the plan) are potentially to be sold and the third retained by the college, as it contains the pedestrian path.

The application is currently on hold pending discussions about appropriate provision for vehicle access.

Whangaparaoa College principal James Thomas says that the college wants a broad pathway and open space that allows comfortable access from the school to Whangaparaoa Road. He says he understands that therefore Lot 3 and the land to the west and northwest of Lot 3 will not be sold.

“When there has been any discussion about vehicular access by future new owners of Lots 1 and Lot 4, the college’s Board of Trustees has been clear that access will not be via our school driveway, which is fully in Lot 2,” Mr Thomas says.

The land was readied for sale by the Ministry of Education – Land Information NZ is now handling the process.

The next steps depend on a decision from Auckland Council regarding the proposed subdivision.
