Student snaps up tour chance

Rodney College student Georgia Brierly will head to Europe next month after jumping at the chance to represent a barbarian side in women’s sevens rugby.

The 16-year-old will head to London on September 28 before travelling to Amsterdam and then Paris.

In Amsterdam, she will play for the NZ Dutch Barbarians U18 Girls Sevens team against sides from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

“Apart from playing touch in Australia, I haven’t competed overseas before. I am really excited about heading to Europe,” Brierly says.

Despite being a top athlete and playing a number of sports, she says contact rugby is not one she has much experience with.

“Most of the team is made up of regular rugby players, but I was selected on athletic ability, so this tournament will be a good challenge for me.”

In addition to the main competition, her side will play warm-up games in London and some top school sevens teams in Paris.

“As a strong rugby nation, we are hoping to win all our games.”

Brierly is doing athletics training three times a week and did a three-day intensive camp with the squad.

She has represented Northland in tag rugby and played at nationals in Wellington earlier this year.
