Games flame in Orewa

Nineteen athletes from the Hibiscus Coast will compete in the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Wellington next month.

They will be among 1300 athletes from clubs around the country who will compete in 14 different Olympic-type events. The local team will be presented in horse riding, ten-pin bowling and swimming.

In the lead-up to the opening ceremony on November 27, police and service personnel throughout NZ are taking part in a series of 31 torch runs.

The torch passed through Orewa on October 5 when it was carried from Hillary Square to the Orewa Police Station to help raise awareness about the Games and much-needed funds.

The Special Olympics is held every four years and is the largest event for athletes with intellectual disabilities in New Zealand.

On the Coast team this year will be Jessica Woomack and Richard Haddow who have both won medals in swimming at previous Games.

Coast supporter Kathy Woomack says the team has so far raised about half of the $20,000 they need. Sausage sizzles will be held at Bunnings in Silverdale on October 27, as well as during November.
