Wellsford cases sit at 10

The number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 at the Wellsford Community Based Assessment Centre (CBAC) has increased by only one since last Thursday (April 9).

This bring to 10 the total number of people who have tested positive at the centre.

Coast to Coast Health spokesperson Dr Tim Malloy says the most recent case involved a woman who was in isolation with a person known to have tested positive.

“It’s therefore no surprise that she became unwell,” he says.

Dr Malloy says he continues to be encouraged by the low numbers testing positive and believes the measures the Government has put in place have made a significant difference.

But he warns there are significant risks of a second wave of infections if the lockdown rules are substantially relaxed too quickly.

He says Singapore was doing really well but has experienced a second-wave, forcing the Government to tighten social distancing rules.

Dr Malloy says New Zealand needs to take heed and adopt a controlled relaxation of lockdown rules, with the ability to react quickly should there be any indication that Covid-19 cases were tracking upwards.

“It’s likely there won’t be as much freedom as quickly as some people were perhaps hoping for,” he says.

Dr Malloy says the numbers being tested at the CBAC is tracking downwards but varies greatly from day-to-day. Yesterday, 18 people were tested.

The Wellsford CBAC covers the region from Warkworth to Brynderwyn, but Dr Malloy says not all those tested at the centre necessarily live within this area.

All the positive cases detected at the centre are connected with overseas travel.
