Coast teenagers seeing the world with water polo

A water polo club that formed five years ago on the Hibiscus Coast is punching well above its weight, with five of its members currently representing NZ.

Claudia Morgan, Maxine Stout and Samantha Bright represented NZ at the Sydney Youth Festival last month. There were 51 teams in total with 650 athletes competing. Claudia competed in the U20 competition where they placed 7th. Maxine and Samantha competed in the U16 division and placed 4th.

Korban Kirk is the youngest player selected for the NZ U17 Water polo team. The team is currently taking part in the European Tour to Montenegro and Croatia, which began on July 17 and goes to August 4. Based in Herceg Novi, the team is playing daily international fixtures as well as travelling to neighbouring destinations like Kotor and Dubrovnik.

Also the youngest team member, Morgan McDowall qualified for the NZ Junior Women’s team, which will compete at the FINA World Women’s Junior Champs in Greece, departing on August 27.

The Hibiscus Coast Water Polo Club has competitions every Sunday at the Stanmore Bay Pool & Leisure Centre.
