Orewa CCTV still under radar

A year after Police instigated the notion of a network of CCTV cameras for Orewa town centre, the project is still under discussion.

Last year business organisation Destination Orewa Beach (DOB) surveyed its members, asking whether town centre-wide CCTV is needed and offering options as to how it could be paid for. The survey was inconclusive and since then the DOB board has been looking at a number of quotes and ways of encouraging business input.

DOB operations manager Hellen Wilkins says the quotes provided initially were too far apart to provide useful comparisons in regard to cost and equipment/technology details.

Further quotes are being sought and once those are in, DOB will hold a question and answer session with its members and CCTV consultants.

A formal ballot across the businesses will then be held, the outcome of which will decide if the project will go ahead or not. A 51 percent ‘yes’ vote is required for a system to be installed.

Police initiated the proposal, saying the cameras will enable them to identify vehicles used by offenders and provide other information of use in solving local crime.
